Addiction and Its Impact on Professionals

Addiction is a disease where you compulsively use substances despite harmful consequences. It usually develops through a combination of environmental, psychological and genetic factors.

Professionals in high-stress positions, such as corporate executives, healthcare providers, attorneys and first responders, face unique pressure that can increase addiction susceptibility.

For example, the constant pressure to perform can lead individuals to try to seek relief through the use of substances. Escaping temporarily through drugs or alcohol can become a habitual coping mechanism relatively quickly.

Other elements of addiction that tend to be unique to people in powerful or stressful positions include:

  • The consequences of addiction can be especially severe for people in these positions because of legal issues, career development and potential loss of licensure.
  • The need to maintain competence and control makes it especially hard for professionals to admit they have a problem and get help.
  • The demands of certain roles can lead to isolation from friends, loved ones and supportive networks. Isolation can make people more vulnerable to turning to substances as a coping mechanism.
  • Professionals may be more likely to deal with co-occurring mental health issues like anxiety, depression or PTSD. That complicates addiction and necessitates integrated treatment approaches.

In treating this population, specific considerations include:

  • The need for confidentiality and privacy.
  • Career-specific therapy to address unique challenges associated with certain professions to ensure treatment is relevant and effective.
  • Regulatory and legal compliance may be a consideration within certain positions.
  • There’s a need for professional treatment programs to provide help with re-entering the workforce following programs to ensure a smoother transition, reducing the risk of relapse.

At Parkdale Center, we are specifically an executive drug and alcohol rehab center. Our programs are ideal if you’re looking for Rockford drug rehab centers because we are relatively nearby.

The first step in an addiction treatment program for most people is a medically supervised withdrawal or detox. The effects of withdrawal on the body and mind differ from person to person, but they can be dangerous or uncomfortable when they’re not correctly addressed.

While Parkdale Center doesn’t provide detox services, we offer a Withdrawal Management Program for safety. It’s guided and gives you individual support throughout your withdrawal based on a physical and mental assessment to establish the type of support program that’s best for you. During withdrawal management, we monitor your physical and mental health. We can provide medications for reducing cravings and symptoms and also psychotherapy sessions.

Our partial hospitalization program is full-time and intensive, with access to all our treatment services. The full-time programming of our partial hospitalization program includes group therapeutic systems and life skills training.

The services include stress and addiction management therapies like cognitive therapy, education on relapse and mindfulness meditation.

You participate in therapeutic programming at least five days a week and for a minimum of three hours daily.

Families and employers are also provided with educational tools and support during this time to help improve outcomes.

On and offsite 12-step support meetings, holistic and alternative treatments, and exercise therapy are part of PHPs, too.

An intensive outpatient program with us, also known as an IOP, facilitates a transition from inpatient treatment, giving more freedom and flexibility to put into practice newly learned coping and life skills.

During an IOP at our center, you spend at least nine therapeutic hours a week with an addiction counselor. Our clinical team recommends IOPs to many clients to ensure they can establish and maintain healthy habits while returning to everyday life.

Elements of an IOP include working on managing relapse triggers and relapse prevention strategies, connecting with family members and medication-assisted treatment when it’s appropriate.

Reach out at any time for more details on our IOP in Indiana.

There’s a well-researched and documented link between substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders. Around half of all people who experience a mental illness during their lifetime, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, will also experience a substance use disorder and vice versa.

We’re experienced in treating addiction and mental disorders at the same time in our dual diagnosis program.

Without treating the mental health condition, the risk of relapse is much greater because the symptoms tend to worsen one another.

During a dual diagnosis program at Parkdale Center, you meet with medical doctors, nurses, and a doctorate-level psychiatric practitioner. They do evaluations to provide a full picture of your health, so your treatment with us is individualized.

From there, we can treat both disorders concurrently.

If you’re looking for addiction treatment in Indiana or nearby, we encourage you to reach out to us and learn about our programs.
