Attorneys
Nearly 44 percent of attorneys with alcohol use disorders say that problematic drinking began within the first 15 years of practicing law, which suggests that the early stages of a legal career are often associated with a higher risk of developing an alcohol addiction. The immense pressure and responsibilities of the profession can lead to a number of mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. For attorneys, the stress levels are high, competition is fierce, hours are long, and the conflict between a case and one’s own value system are often contributing factors that can lead to a substance use disorder. As a result, the use of alcohol, prescription, and illicit drugs are among this population is higher than in most other fields.

Attorneys are often deeply invested in their career and will often sacrifice their own well-being in order to achieve their work goals. As a direct result, the balance and well-being of their social and family relationships can often suffer as well.
