Specialized Treatment For Anesthesia Providers

Anesthesia Providers

There are many contributing factors to support why those in the anesthesia field misuse drugs. Due to the complexity of their work and high-stress environment, the ease of access to highly addictive medications, and the ability to divert small amounts of these drugs for personal use, persons in this field often face an increased risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD).

“The AANA recognizes that anesthesia providers, because of their exposure and the nature of their work, may be at high risk for substance misuse.”

In 2000, Alexander er al found that anesthesiologists were 2.79 times more likely to die from drug-related causes than an internalist and that most drug-related deaths occur within the first 5 years after graduating.

At Parkdale Center, we understand that early detection of a SUD is imperative to prevent harm to the impaired professional as well as their patients. This can often be a struggle for professionals in this particular field because the individual who is suffering from a SUD is often the last one to recognize that there is a problem. Early detection is also difficult to identify because of the many different personal and professional relationships that are established. This causes the behavioral changes to be present but without a view of them as a whole it can be hard to recognize the overall signs and symptoms.

Re-entry into the anesthesia field can be complicated due to the constant access to opioids which presents a threat to sobriety and increases the possibility of relapse. With the completion of a treatment program and continuing aftercare and community support, long term sobriety is attainable and Parkdale Center can help.
Parkdale Center is aware of the necessity of balancing your career, your personal life, and your sobriety. We offer specialized treatment programs that cater to the specific needs of your profession.

Parkdale is committed to working with various regulatory, legislative, investigative, monitoring, and treatment organizations to ensure the Aftercare program exceeds expectations. In addition, Parkdale will maintain strict patient confidentiality while adhering to all the HIPAA regulations.
