Parkdale Center is a partner of the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology. We provide addiction treatment to anesthesiologists in need and work with the AANA to provide anesthesiologists with as many resources as possible. You can read more about this partnership here.
There are many contributing factors to support why those in the anesthesia field misuse drugs. Due to the complexity of their work and high-stress environment, the ease of access to highly addictive medications, and the ability to divert small amounts of these drugs for personal use, persons in this field often face an increased risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD).
“The AANA recognizes that anesthesia providers, because of their exposure and the nature of their work, may be at high risk for substance misuse.”
In 2000, AANA found that anesthesiologists were 2.79 times more likely to die from drug-related causes than an internalist and that most drug-related deaths occur within the first 5 years after graduating.
At Parkdale Center, we understand that early detection of a SUD is imperative to prevent harm to the impaired professional as well as their patients. This can often be a struggle for professionals in this particular field because the individual who is suffering from a SUD is often the last one to recognize that there is a problem. Early detection is also difficult to identify because of the many different personal and professional relationships that are established. This causes the behavioral changes to be present but without a view of them as a whole it can be hard to recognize the overall signs and symptoms.
Re-entry into the anesthesia field can be complicated due to the constant access to opioids which presents a threat to sobriety and increases the possibility of relapse. With the completion of a treatment program and continuing aftercare and community support, long term sobriety is attainable and Parkdale Center can help.
Parkdale Center is aware of the necessity of balancing your career, your personal life, and your sobriety. We offer specialized treatment programs that cater to the specific needs of your profession.
We Are here for you
Our AANA Partnership
Since 1983, AANA has stood at the forefront of healthcare associations, dedicated to advancing the physical and mental well-being of CRNAs and RRNAs. In 2018, we established a collaboration with AANA, leveraging our expertise in SUD to assist anesthesia professionals. Throughout the years, Parkdale Center has been responsive to AANA Helpline calls, offering support for alcohol and substance-related concerns. This partnership has broadened our impact, aiding CRNAs and RRNAs confronting SUD or facing suspicions of drug diversion.
The expanded alliance between Parkdale Center and AANA seeks to heighten awareness of the AANA Helpline, ensuring that anesthesia professionals can access the necessary assistance in the early stages of SUD. By providing swift responses and facilitating expedited, preferential admission into treatment, our goal is to intervene promptly, offering crucial support to those in need and circumventing the challenges associated with delayed assistance.
