Specialized Treatment For Attorneys

Attorneys

Being an attorney comes with an enormous amount of pressure that arises at the very beginning of your career.

Nearly 44 percent of attorneys with alcohol use disorders say that problematic drinking began within the first 15 years of practicing law, which suggests that the early stages of a legal career are often associated with a higher risk of developing an alcohol addiction.

Attorneys are often deeply invested in their careers and sacrifice their own well-being to achieve their work goals. As a direct result, the balance and well-being of their social and family relationships can often suffer as well.

Why Are Attorneys and Lawyers at a High Risk of Substance Abuse?

Attorneys and lawyers often face high levels of stress and pressure in their profession, which can contribute to substance misuse and mental health concerns. Some factors that contribute to this increased risk include:

The legal profession is known for its demanding workload, long hours, and high-stakes cases. Attorneys often face tight deadlines, intense competition, and the responsibility of representing clients’ interests. The pressure to succeed can lead to chronic stress, which may increase the likelihood of substance misuse as a coping mechanism.

Lawyers are often expected to meet their client’s needs and expectations, which can be challenging and emotionally draining. Dealing with difficult clients or working on emotionally charged cases can take a toll on mental well-being.

Lawyers are often perfectionists, striving for excellence in their work. The fear of making mistakes or not meeting expectations can lead to anxiety and stress, driving some individuals to turn to substances as a way to cope.

The nature of legal work can be isolating, with lawyers spending long hours researching, drafting documents, and preparing for cases. This isolation can lead to feelings of loneliness and contribute to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

Achieving a healthy work-life balance can be particularly challenging for lawyers, given the demanding nature of their profession. Long hours and high levels of stress can make it difficult for attorneys to prioritize self-care and engage in activities outside of work that promote mental well-being.

There may be a culture within the legal profession that normalizes or even encourages behaviors such as long hours, excessive drinking at networking events, and using substances to cope with stress. This culture can perpetuate unhealthy habits and contribute to substance misuse.
