Therapies We Use

Toledo addiction treatment for each client has to be as unique as their circumstances and goals. Uniform care with rigid treatment plans simply doesn’t work, which is why our staff members treat each client as if they are our only one. In that pursuit, we employ a variety of treatments and therapeutic modalities for our clients.

Dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, is closely related to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), one of the most well-established forms of talk therapy. Both types focus on recognizing potentially harmful or unhelpful thought patterns that often lead to destructive behaviors, such as illicit substance use.

More specifically, though, DBT focuses on helping clients acknowledge and accept current conditions, which may be uncomfortable. Such level-headed acceptance can allow clients to recognize feelings and emotions that precede substance use or other behaviors. Pausing for a few moments to appreciate the present moment in a non-judgmental way can open the door to healthier coping mechanisms. This is often easier said than done, but many clients with substance use disorder have great success after DBT sessions.

For many clients, substance use disorder is one piece of the addiction puzzle. Those who use illicit substances are more likely to have a mental illness or mental health condition. Additionally, those with underlying mental health conditions are more likely than the average person to develop a substance use disorder. Treating one without treating the other often leaves clients with an incomplete treatment plan.

Parkdale Center’s staff understands the numerous ways that substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health conditions can interact. Side effects of certain substances, for example, can mimic symptoms of certain psychological conditions. Going through withdrawal can also produce feelings of stress, sadness, or irritability—hallmark symptoms of common mental health conditions. Parsing each client’s symptoms, feelings, and emotions for dual-diagnosis purposes is essential in getting down to the root cause of substance use disorders.

Before clients can begin our outpatient services, they must test negative for illicit substances. Getting off such substances is the first, and sometimes most difficult, part of the recovery journey. You often must contend with withdrawal symptoms and intense cravings, which can make it challenging to work and fulfill other life responsibilities.

If you are able to withdraw from a substance without round-the-clock care at an inpatient center, we can help you do it safely and securely from the comfort of your own home. This task often requires medication, complementary therapy sessions, nutritional guidance, and other supportive measures. Under the close virtual watch and guidance of an experienced doctor, you will be given the tools to get through acute addiction and move on to the next step to sobriety.

An important part of recovery for many of our clients is maintaining or regaining their careers. We have experience helping workers in highly accountable career fields maintain the professional lifestyles for which they have worked so hard. Treating your substance use disorder does not have to be a complete interruption of your career; we work hard so it doesn’t come to that.

In addition to communicating with legal professionals, licensing and accrediting agencies, state boards, and other organizations, we can help you and your current employer agree on a return-to-work contract. Many companies are becoming more sensitive to the mental health needs of their employees, and that can work to your advantage with our help.

Outpatient Care near Toledo

How Outpatient Care Works

While inpatient care for substance use disorder is the only option for some people with severe conditions, 24/7 stays in such facilities may not work with your work schedule. If you can effectively treat your substance use disorder in an outpatient setting, we can help you come up with a personalized treatment plan that meets all your goals.

Regular outpatient treatment is not dissimilar from, say, weekly talk therapy sessions. Those who are largely functional in the outside world with only mild substance use disorder can live their lives and receive treatment from Parkdale Center just a few hours per week. Treatment often consists of one-on-one counseling, group therapy sessions, honing of social skills, and other useful interventions to help clients maintain their sobriety.

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is suitable for clients who may not be ready to fully return to the outside world but are comfortable enough to leave for home at the end of each day. IOP clients often spend around a dozen hours per week at our facility. They receive treatment much like those in the regular outpatient program but simply have to commit to a greater amount of time.

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the outpatient program requiring the most time from clients. Although they’re still allowed to sleep at home and return to their families at the end of each day, working a full-time job can be challenging. PHP clients often have a time commitment of 20 hours per week or more. This outpatient level of care is often best for clients who recently went through detoxification or were discharged from an inpatient facility.
