Unions and Addiction

Addiction Treatment for Unions

While substance use disorders (SUDs) and addiction can affect individuals from all walks of life, union and trade workers often face unique challenges that can exacerbate these issues. The demanding nature of their jobs, coupled with the pressure to meet high expectations from clients or employers, can push workers to their limits and increase the likelihood of substance misuse or addiction.

At Parkdale Center, we recognize the specific challenges faced by union and trade workers, which is why we have tailored our drug and alcohol rehab facility to cater to the needs of the working professional. Our programs place a strong emphasis on career building and restoration, acknowledging the importance of maintaining employment while undergoing treatment.

In addition to addressing the practical aspects of recovery, we also focus on equipping our clients with essential skills and strategies to navigate the emotional complexities that contribute to addiction. By providing a supportive and understanding environment, we aim to help individuals process their emotions and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

When you choose Parkdale Center, you can rest assured that you are entering a space that not only recognizes but also empathizes with your unique needs and experiences as a union or trade worker. Specialized Treatment For Unions & Trades

Unions & Trades

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the construction industry ranks among the highest in the United States for substance abuse and substance use disorders. The demanding schedules during peak construction seasons significantly contribute to this prevalence. Studies indicate that individuals working over 50 hours per week face heightened risks of substance misuse, particularly evident among construction workers enduring long hours during building seasons. Moreover, steelworkers, often subjected to mandatory or voluntary overtime, face an even greater risk compared to their counterparts with standard 40-hour workweeks.

Beyond the grueling schedules, the emotional toll and strain on family life are profound in these industries. Coupled with the physically demanding nature of the work, which frequently leads to substantial discomfort or pain, the culture within these fields often perpetuates a “work hard, play hard” mentality. This culture can foster an environment where substance indulgence is normalized, exacerbating the risk of addiction.

Notably, impaired construction and steelworkers face alarming risks of workplace accidents, which can result in severe injuries or fatalities. The combination of substance misuse and the inherently hazardous nature of these professions underscores the urgent need for targeted intervention and support within these communities.

Specialized Treatment for Unions & Trades

Recent estimates suggest that all of the factors that make union and trade work high-stress can indeed lead to elevated rates of substance use.

  • Construction was rated second as an industry with high levels of alcohol misuse. Similar fields, including manufacturing, mining, utilities, and factory work, also report higher-than-average levels of misuse.
  • Construction was also rated fourth for rates of illicit drug use.
  • 16.5% of workers reported heavy alcohol use in the past month.
  • 11.6% of workers reported illicit drug use in the past month.
  • 14.3% of workers reported substance use over the past year.

It’s not too much of a stretch to assume that the normalization of substance use in the fields many union and trade workers occupy makes figures like these seem more commonplace than alarming. Fortunately, help is available for those living with addiction, even those whose careers are closely linked to their substance use.

Parkdale Center offers quality treatment for working professionals, including union and trade workers. Our mission is to help you build a successful career and a lifestyle that’s both healthy and sustainable as you work toward recovery.

Help for Professionals

We Understand the Unique Needs of Union & Trade Workers

At Parkdale Center, we strive to understand the realities and challenges that many union and trade workers face regularly. Our commitment to providing career restoration services and leading drug and alcohol rehab drives us to dig deep into what makes substance use a challenge for so many hard workers. Research shows that those who are union and trade workers often face addiction more than other populations. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the construction industry has one of the highest rates of substance abuse and substance use disorders compared to other industries in the US. Long hours during the construction high season are a huge contributing factor to the levels of misuse in this industry and related fields. Studies have shown that people working more than 50 hours per week are at a higher risk for substance misuse. The exhausting hours that many union and trade workers are used to can take a huge toll on mental and physical health, which may overall increase the risk of addictive behaviors. Not only are long hours emotionally challenging and difficult on family life but the work union and trade workers do is also oftentimes labor-intensive and can result in substantial physical pain or discomfort. These industries typically adopt a mentality of "work hard; play hard," which sometimes encourages participation in substance indulgence that can lead to significant problems later on.

Our clinical staff helps clients manage withdrawal symptoms that come with sobriety in a safe, controlled environment. While we can’t help you detox from substances, we are here to make the withdrawal process safer and easier.

This intensive treatment program engages our clients full-time in a combination of group, individual, and educational activities or therapies. Clients benefit from consistent support and supervision while pursuing their goals through targeted treatment strategies.

  • Once a PHP is complete, clients can transition to our IOP, which is a step down in terms of time commitment and overall rigor. Still, our IOP serves as a safe space for union and trade workers to come together, share their experiences, and learn from one another.

Because mental health factors so often play into addiction, it’s often necessary to treat both areas of need to see success in either. Clients who need mental health support can take advantage of our dual-diagnosis treatment, which focuses on meeting mental health needs while simultaneously treating addiction(s).
