How a PHP Program in Indiana Can Help

What are the Benefits of Partial Hospitalization Programs?

Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) provide a critical step in the continuum of care for those grappling with mental health and substance use disorders. They balance the intensive support of inpatient treatment and the relative independence of outpatient care.

One of the primary benefits of PHPs is the integration of a structured, full-day therapeutic environment with the opportunity to live in a sober, supportive environment in the evening. This structure presents the double advantage of immersive therapy during the day and the chance to apply learned skills in a real-life setting at night. It allows individuals to begin rebuilding their lives while still under the supportive umbrella of professional treatment.

PHPs also offer a comprehensive approach to treatment. As outlined in the Parkdale Center’s program, clients participate in various therapeutic activities ranging from cognitive therapy to mindfulness meditation and physical activities like gym visits. This holistic approach caters to the unique needs of each individual and promotes healing in all facets of life—physical, mental, and emotional. Including holistic and alternative treatments, such as creative expression, further broadens the therapeutic experience, offering avenues for self-exploration and growth that traditional therapies may not provide.

Parkdale Center for Working Professionals

Why Choose Our Indiana Partial Hospitalization Program for Professionals?

PHPs provide high support, with therapeutic programming available at least five days a week. This consistent, intense focus on recovery can be critical for individuals as they navigate the early stages of recovery, providing them with the tools and resilience to face the challenges of life outside the treatment center.

Support extends to families and employers as well. By educating these vital components of a client’s support network, PHPs ensure that the environment awaiting the client post-treatment is understanding, supportive, and conducive to ongoing recovery.

PHPs like Parkdale’s offer a serene, healing environment that can be instrumental in recovery. The proximity to natural beauty, such as Lake Michigan, offers an opportunity for outdoor therapy and reconnecting with nature, which can be profoundly healing and restorative.

PHPs provide comprehensive, intense, holistic treatment within a supportive, healing environment. They bridge the gap between inpatient and outpatient care, offering a blend of structure and independence that can be critical to long-term recovery.

Who Should Participate in a Partial Hospitalization Program?

Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) are typically designed for those who require a substantial level of care and support in their recovery process but who do not necessitate around-the-clock medical supervision. Ideal candidates for a PHP often include individuals transitioning from a more intensive inpatient care program and those who need more structured oversight than what traditional outpatient care can provide.

Clients who qualify for PHPs are usually stable in terms of their physical health but still need significant mental health support. They may be struggling with severe depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, or other serious mental health conditions. Individuals grappling with substance abuse issues or co-occurring disorders can also benefit significantly from PHPs.

One of the fundamental prerequisites for admission into a PHP is the individual’s willingness and dedication to recovery. Since PHPs allow patients to return home at the end of the day, individuals must demonstrate a commitment to their recovery, the ability to maintain sobriety outside the treatment facility, and a safe, supportive environment to return to.

It’s important to note that while PHPs can provide intensive therapeutic support, they are not suited for everyone. Individuals in immediate crisis, those with unmanaged severe mental illnesses, or those who lack a secure living environment may require a different level of care. As always, individual circumstances and needs should guide the choice of treatment level, with decisions made in consultation with qualified healthcare professionals.

Understanding Your Personal Options for Treatment

What is the Difference Between PHP and IOP?

Partial hospitalization programs and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) offer more intensive care than traditional outpatient programs, but they differ in structure and intensity.

As described above, a PHP is a step down from inpatient care but still provides comprehensive, structured treatment. Clients typically spend several hours each day, five to seven days a week, at the treatment facility and return home at night. PHPs are ideal for those who require significant support but need more 24-hour supervision.

On the other hand, an IOP is less intensive than a PHP. IOP clients also participate in scheduled treatment sessions, which typically occur fewer hours per week and can be scheduled around work or school commitments. IOPs are often best suited for stable individuals who have a supportive home environment but still need structured therapy and support to maintain their recovery.

In essence, both PHPs and IOPs provide crucial support in the continuum of care, but the choice between them depends on the individual’s needs, stability, and personal circumstances.

Clients will receive a comprehensive education on the science and treatment of addiction and recovery, including:

  • Alcohol and drug education
  • Psychoeducation covering mental health conditions commonly co-existing with addiction
  • Medication education
  • Guest lectures from the addiction, healthcare, legal, regulatory, and other communities

Additional resources include:

  • Gratitude
  • Nutritional guidance
  • Spiritual guidance
  • Family support, including 2-day in-person Family Programs and weekly support Zoom meetings, focused on addiction education, family dynamics, healthy relationships, and how to support a loved one in recovery
  • Random drug screens to ensure compliance
After this phase, it is essential that we move towards establishing new habits for home use. However, it must be done with great care and supervision in order to manage triggers that could overtake your success in recovery. The next stage is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
